Reformation of Society

I have just finished watching a program ‘Aaj Islam’ on Aaj TV with a guest Mr.Mauj Amjad (sorry for spelling errors). I really liked the person opinion and he was really touching and talked things which were needed to be addressed to our society. The program was on westernization of our society. There was discussion regarding the celebration of Basant. He said the religious scholar, the think tank should not focus their attention on event rather the values. He said the event has become popular due to the acceptance in the society. The acceptance of the event shows the depiction of society and their value. The event should not be termed religious or not religious it is the element should be studied. For instance before giving any holiday the government do cost and benefit analysis of giving the holiday.
The individual problem associated with the event could be lavish expenditure, death of people and disturbance in income-cycle for daily wage earners. As far as lavish expenditure is concerned we should see that whether the lavish expenditure is done only due to this event or it is already prevalent in the society and people tend to spend huge sum of money and show their wealth in other events as well or is a trend in the society for instance in wedding, Eid celebrations…
Now saying that spending money for this event should be prohibited is like saying a person with a hobby of traveling not to travel, stopping a cricket fan on spending money on cricket accessories or tickets to a match. So I might not love kite-flying or have an interest in it but someone may be a kite-lover then we should let him spend his money on it.
Then as far as death-toll is concerned we should see how we value life and give importance to a single-life. The government is there to regulate the event so that lower-level of mishaps happens and the cons of events should be minimized.
As far as the change is concerned it could not be imposed over night. If something has acceptance then this shows people are inclined towards it. If a change has to be taken place because it might support bad-values (showing wealth in wedding) then it should be changed by the reformers by changing the inclination which might take generation.

Now since Valentine is coming we can see that people are saying against it. But it’s a popular event in Pakistan. There is a strong acceptance for Valentine in Pakistan. We should not criticize valentine only which is only a depiction of the society’s value rather we should initially see what the value that is associated with it are. With valentine the cross-gender relationship prior to marriage is a value-depiction which is also then depicted in other event such as Marathon.
But its solution could not be made through coercive means it would only made people to stop doing it public sphere of life but continue in their private sphere of life. The religious and political parties want it to be done through the legal means. The legal system is there to make stability in the system, regulate the system and safeguard the interest of everyone. It’s not there to bring reformation which should only be brought by gradual changing the attitude by using education and other mediums.
Then the religious scholar or so-called caretakers of Religions tend to do things and promote things they opt for and say it’s their duty. They might have a duty to tell the truth to let everyone know about the truth but to bring to straight part is not their duty. Even in Quran there is a story of group who didn’t obeyed the saying of the missionaries the Prophet P.B.U.H. told the missionaries that your duty is just to let them know you would get your reward but let those people to do what they want to.
